Several months ago, Snapchat secretly acquired a 3D capture company called Seene. Seene had a mobile app that let users scan objects in three dimensions with a regular camera phone. They were also working on facial scanning, augmented reality, and reconstructing full scenes in 3D. Snapchat bought the company for a relatively low price and moved the employees to its headquarters in Venice Beach, California.
Fast forward to last week, when Snapchat listed a good handful of 3D related jobs on their site. They are currently hiring 3D designers, 3D animators, 3D lighting artists, 3D character animators, 3D max morph modelers, and 3D UI/UX engineers. Snap states that these roles will be crucial in shaping how Snapchat tells visual stories.
It will be interesting to see how this continues to develop. Obviously Spectacles will play a big role in this as well.
Snapchat also just announced two new features…
Happy holidays from Snapchat!
